Typika Service for Sunday, April 4

This service can be read by families and individuals, on Sundays when they cannot attend Divine Liturgy. One "Reader" is assigned before the service begins. Others present can join in the parts labeled "People." (The italicized labels and subtitles are not to be read aloud.)

Reader: Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord, Jesus Christ our God, have mercy upon us. Amen.

The First Antiphon—Psalm 102 (103)

Bless the Lord, O my soul! Blessed art Thou, O Lord!

The Second Antiphon—Psalm 145 (146)

People: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

When his breath departs he returns to his earth, on that very day his plans perish.

The Third Antiphon—The Beatitudes

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

THE EPISTLE

Reader: O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. To you, O Lord, have I cried, O my God.

The reading is from St Paul's Letter to the Hebrews. (4:14–5:6)

Brethren, since we have a High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee”; as he says also in another place, “Thou art a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”

For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." The Prayer of Forgiveness

Reader: O God, remit, pardon and forgive our sins, whether voluntary or involuntary, whether by words or deeds, whether in knowledge or ignorance, whether by day or night, whether in mind or thought; forgive us all these, for thou art good and lovest mankind.

The Lord's Prayer

People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Amen.

The Kontakion for the Veneration of the Cross

Reader: The fiery sword no longer guards the gate of Eden, for in a strange and glorious way the wood of the Cross has quenched its flames. The sting of death and the victory of hell are now destroyed, for thou art come, my Savior, crying unto those in hell: “Return again to Paradise.”

Psalm 33

Hymn to the Theotokos

People: It is truly meet to bless you, O Theotokos, ever blessed and most pure, and the Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim: without defilement you gave birth to God the Word: true Theotokos, we magnify you.
